I wrote the introduction to my capstone as a sermon to reflect the deeply ingrained, performative nature of religious teachings on the body, particularly those surrounding purity culture. The sermon-like style mirrors the way these teachings were presented to me growing up—strong, authoritative, and filled with urgency. It captures the language of control and submission often used in purity culture, where the body is not just a physical entity but a moral battleground. By adopting the sermon format, I am attempting to re-embody the rhetoric that shaped my early understanding of my body’s value, its supposed purity, and its inherent limitations. The use of this style allows me to engage with the doctrinal language that has impacted my relationship with my body, while also setting the stage for unpacking the tension between these religious teachings and my body’s natural resistance and desire for agency.
